December 2, 1862:
James and twin brother John were born prematurely and John died soon after birth. James was kept warm on quilts on the oven door. The bonnet James wore would fit on a woman's fist. [Fanshier]

1869:
Sworn statement from the family physician regarding James' birth sent as documentation for Civil War pension due a minor. [PenApp#176457]

June 2, 1870:
James was living with his mother and stepfather, Alonzo Bell in Richland Township, Vinton County, Ohio. [census-OH]

February 21, 1874:
James was living with his mother and stepfather in Allensville, Vinton County, Ohio. [PenApp#176457]

June 1, 1880:
James was living with his mother and stepfather in Alexander Township, Rush County, Kansas. He was working on George W. Cooley's farm and later married George's daughter Ada Blanche. [census-KA & Joel]
