June 6, 1861:
John enlisted as a private in Company B - 15th U.S.R.C., Missouri cavalry. [PenApp#1049642]

December 6, 1861:
John was discharged. [PenApp#1049642]

March 3, 1865:
John and Van. B. Gatewood purchased a parcel of land in Section 2, Township 33, Range 21 of Polk County, Missouri for $400. [PC deed H:558]

1870:
John was farming with his family in Benton Township, Polk County, Missouri. The value of his real property was $2400 and his personal property was $462. [census-Mo]

March 31, 1873:
John bought the 40 acres of the south west quarter of the north east quarter of Section 33, Townahip 34 of Range 21 from the County of Polk, Missouri for $120.20. [PC deed R:340]

August 15, 1891:
John applied for a Civil War pension claiming liver disease and collic indigestion resulting from malaria contacted in the summer about 1863. It appears that his application was denied. [PenApp#1049642]

1900:
John was farming in Brunswick Township, Chariton County, Missouri. Helping him on the farm was his son Laurence. Also living with them was a grandson Wilner Payne, b. June 1899. [census-Mo]

1920:
